Leadership Development

Leadership programs that turn theory into everyday practice.

For more than 30 years Response Group has continuously refined our programs to help people and organisations drive meaningful, sustainable cultural change.

  • 30+years refining our leadership programs
  • 60+years of research behind Systems Leadership
  • 4-5years running ongoing programs for some clients
  • 3tools leaders use to shape culture

Our approach

Experience it. Understand it. Embed it.

Thirty years of delivering training internationally has led us to design and build some pretty interesting experiential challenges. Participants take the theory out into the field and experience the 'a-ha' moment when theory changes into practice and real learning takes place.

  1. ExperienceHands-on challenges take the theory out into the field.
  2. UnderstandThe 'a-ha' moment, where theory changes into practice.
  3. EmbedA structured process transfers the learning into the workplace through ongoing mentoring and support.

Your team will have fun while they learn.

Tailored to you

Built around your organisation, not off the shelf

Whether you want to develop your next generation of managers or upskill your current management team for the next level in your organisation, we can help.

Your preferred format

We draw from our extensive range of program options and work with you to build the format that suits your people.

Proven, then tailored

We can share programs that have worked well internationally, and we usually modify them to suit each client.

One program or ongoing

Whether you want one program or ongoing support, we can help. For some clients we have run leadership and management training for the last 4-5 years.

In practice: Queensland Label Makers

Queensland Label Makers wanted a program focused on people development, lean manufacturing, cost management and reporting, and process improvement. Feedback from the GM and the participants was overwhelmingly positive, and we have since been asked to deliver the program in another country.

The framework behind our programs

Systems Leadership Theory

We use Systems Leadership as the underpinning framework for leadership and management. Based on 60+ years of research, it gives leaders an explicit and tested social theory to understand and predict behaviour, so they can create conditions where people willingly give of their best.

Four underpinning principles

ClarityWork, roles, authorities and available resources are clear throughout the organisation.
SimplicitySystems enable the work to be done as simply as possible, and are easy to understand and operate.
MeritocracyPeople are appointed to roles based on their capability to do the work now and into the future.
MutualityAll parties gain from the working relationships.

Understanding and organising the work

Two deceptively simple questions sit at the heart of the theory: What is the work? and Whose work is it? Answering them means exploring how best to apply human capability to achieve the purpose of the organisation. Different roles need a different mix of five elements of capability:

  • Problem solving ability
  • Social process skill
  • Application
  • Knowledge
  • Technical skill

Understanding and creating culture

Cultures are created when groups share mythologies: beliefs about whether behaviours are positive or negative, judged against six universal values (honesty, trust, courage, dignity, fairness and love). Leaders can actively shape the culture within their team, and they have three tools to do it:

  • Systems: the way we do things
  • Symbols: non-verbal messages
  • Leadership behaviours: what I do and say
